Consistently working towards a goal really works!

A personal story to explain you why consistency is key for self-development.

A personal story. You probably know the image of a girl in class who was always a bit clumsy, not fully understood, and certainly not able to do handstands or cartwheels in the schoolyard. I was that girl. I’ve never been able to do a handstand in my life. I found it terrifying. The few attempts I made ended in creative but yet painful falls. And yes, a week ago, I finally got my first handstand! The feeling when I finally succeeded was so incredibly good.
Half a year earlier, I had made a commitment to free myself from the belief that I would never be able to do a handstand. After months of trying, I still couldn’t even get one leg against the wall. My husband patiently watched all of this and at one point said, “Elsbeth, this isn’t going to work. You need to practice every day in sets of five attempts. First, try to get one leg against the wall, then tap the wall with both legs, and finally try to hold both legs against the wall.” After weeks of practicing every day, I started noticing that I was getting closer and closer to the wall and eventually overcame my fear of standing completely vertical against it.

Why am I sharing this with you? In my coaching practice, I regularly see clients struggling. They’ve made a commitment to do things differently, start out highly motivated, but when they face some resistance (which inevitably shows up), the process stalls. The key is to embrace the resistance and pick up the thread again. Be and stay consistent! It is my mission to help people with this!
